Countries from all over the world hated each other. They wanted more and more land from each other and (mostly) the continent Africa. This would probably have started World War One anyway, but this is the proper story about how World War One started.
In 1914 the prince of Austria & Hungary went to Serbia. He was driving around in an open car in Sarajevo. First somebody tried to bomb him, but they missed. Later Gavrilo Princip shot and killed him.
Austria & Hungary claimed a huge amount of money from Serbia. They said if Serbia didn’t pay off their debt, they would declare war. Serbia did not have that much money, and that’s how World War One started.
