Trench Warfare

When The Tripple Entente and The Tripple Alliance were fighting, they got stuck. They both dug holes in the ground and made rooms. This made it easier to shoot at each other “safely.”

Trenches were used to hide behind and shoot at the enemy. Sometimes the soldiers were told to run up and conquer the enemy's trench. The other side shot and killed most of the people running.

The Triple Alliance made their trenches much better than The Triple Entente did. Living in the trenches was horrible. They had to walk around in mud all day, they got sick because of it. It smelled horrible down there, there were dead bodies everywhere. It was hard to sleep, it was boring, there wasn't enough food, there were rats, and flights bombed gas over them.

On the first Christmas of the war, some of the soldiers went up from the trenches and played football. (You can read more about that on our page.)
